Dubai school admissions timeline

Dubai's main intake starts in late August, and schools accept applications for it months ahead. Mid-year entry is also normal here. This page sets out the sequence, so you know what should be happening at each point before a move.

In short

  • For the August intake, apply six to twelve months ahead; the binding constraint is space in your child's exact year group, not a national deadline.
  • Most Dubai schools assess before offering a place, and nearly all ask for the last two years of school reports.
  • Offers carry a deadline and a deposit, so two live offers usually means two deposits.
  • Mid-year entry is normal for relocation families and narrows choice rather than removing it.
  • The transfer certificate from the previous school is the document most likely to delay a start date — request it early.

The sequence, working back from the start date

Windows are typical for the August intake; a mid-year move compresses all of them.

  1. 9 to 12 months before

    Decide curriculum and area first

Before you contact anyone, settle the curriculum you want continuity in and the areas that work for your commute. These two decisions remove most of the market and make every later step shorter. Nothing else you do at this stage matters as much.

  2. 6 to 9 months before

Apply to your shortlist, not to one school

Dubai schools accept applications for the August intake well ahead of it, and popular year groups fill first. Applying to several schools in the same window is normal here and is the only reliable protection against a single waiting list. Each application carries its own non-refundable fee.

  3. 4 to 8 months before

    Assessment

Most Dubai schools assess before offering a place. For early years this is usually an observed play session; from primary upwards it is typically an age-appropriate literacy and numeracy assessment, and in senior years it can include subject papers and an interview. Schools also ask for the last two years of school reports.

  4. 3 to 6 months before

Offer, deposit and the acceptance deadline

An offer comes with a deadline and a deposit. This is the point at which two offers become a decision rather than an option, because holding both usually means paying two deposits. Confirm in writing whether the deposit is credited against a term's tuition or held until the child leaves.

  5. 1 to 3 months before

    Enrolment paperwork and transfer documents

Enrolment requires documents that take time to obtain: passport and residence visa pages, Emirates ID where issued, birth certificate, immunisation records and a transfer certificate from the previous school. A missing transfer certificate is one of the most common causes of a delayed start.

  6. Any time

    Mid-year entry

Dubai schools do admit through the year where a place exists, and relocations rarely align with the August intake. Mid-year entry narrows the choice rather than removing it: fewer schools will have space in your exact year group, so flexibility on area or curriculum matters more the later you arrive.

If you are already behind this timeline

Most families arrive at this page later than the first window, and that is a workable position rather than a lost one. Two things recover the most ground: applying to several schools in the same week instead of sequentially, and widening the areas you will accept before you widen the curriculum you want. Curriculum continuity is harder to replace than a shorter commute.

Where a year group is genuinely full, ask how the waiting list is ordered and keep two other applications live. Dubai availability moves through the year as other families relocate out.

Common questions about Dubai admissions timing

Your intended start date decides which intake you are applying for, and it is one of the inputs used when we identify suitable schools — how matching works explains the rest.

Timings describe the common pattern across Dubai schools we cover. Individual schools set their own application windows, assessment formats and offer deadlines; confirm each with the school's admissions team.
