How admissions work in Sharjah
Most Sharjah schools follow the same stages, whatever the curriculum.

Enquire and check the year group
Confirm the year group each child would enter in Sharjah. Age cut-offs differ between systems, so the same child can be placed a year apart in two schools.

Assessment
Most schools assess before offering a place. This can be a short online task, a classroom visit or a subject test, depending on age.

Offer, deposit and registration
An offer is usually held only after a registration fee or deposit is paid. Check whether either is refundable before you accept.
Documents to prepare
Some documents can take time to arrange from abroad. Start collecting them before you have chosen a school.

Which Sharjah schools have places for your children?
A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.
School websites cannot tell you this. Availability changes when a family leaves, when a contract ends, or when a new year group opens. That is why we ask schools directly instead of publishing a number that would be out of date by the time you read it.

Choosing where to live in Sharjah
We do not rank areas. These are the questions that decide whether a school works day to day.
The Dubai commute decides more than the school does
Sharjah to Dubai at peak hours can take two to three times the off-peak journey. If one parent works in Dubai and children study in Sharjah, test both directions at the real times before signing anything.
Muwaileh, Al Nahda and University City
Most of the larger private schools sit in or near these areas. Al Nahda is closest to Dubai and priced accordingly; Muwaileh and University City are where a lot of the newer campuses are.
Bus routes reach further than you expect
Sharjah schools run extensive bus networks, including into parts of Dubai and Ajman. A school that looks too far may already collect from your street.
Fee level is the real difference from Dubai
Sharjah covers a much wider price range at the affordable end. Families relocating from Dubai often find the same curriculum at a materially lower fee, with a longer commute as the trade-off.
Moving to Sharjah with children: a checklist
The school-related steps that decide how smooth the first term is.
- Confirm each child's year group under the curriculum you are moving to in Sharjah.
- Collect and, where required, attest school reports and certificates before you leave.
- Ask schools about places for every child in the same request, not one at a time.
- Check whether registration fees and deposits are refundable if your move date changes.
- Check the visa or residency steps that enrolment can depend on.
- Ask about learning support early, since capacity is decided case by case.
- Line up housing only after you know which school can take all of your children.

Moving with more than one child
One school that works for every child, not one child
Most families moving to Sharjah are moving with more than one child, and the hardest part is rarely finding a good school. It is finding one school that can take all of your children in the same year.
Checking each child separately, school by school, is where the search becomes slow. A school that has room in Year 1 may be full in Year 4, and you only learn that after two emails and a wait.

How schooling works in Sharjah
Private schools in Sharjah are licensed and inspected by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which is separate from Dubai's KHDA and Abu Dhabi's ADEK. The rules, the inspection framework and the fee approvals are Sharjah's own.
SPEA, not KHDA
Every private school in the emirate is licensed by SPEA, which also runs inspections and approves fee changes. A school's Dubai rating means nothing here, and a group with campuses in both emirates is inspected separately in each.
Ask a school for its most recent SPEA inspection outcome directly. Parents often assume a well-known brand carries its Dubai rating across the border. It does not.
A wider fee range than the rest of the UAE
Sharjah spans genuinely affordable schools serving large resident communities and a smaller number of premium campuses. That range is the emirate's defining feature for relocating families.
Fee increases require SPEA approval, so published tuition tends to move in steps rather than continuously. Ask what the school has been approved to charge for the coming year, not just the current figure.
Indian and Pakistani curriculum schools are a major part of the market
CBSE and other South Asian curricula are strongly represented, often at the lowest fee levels in the emirate, and frequently oversubscribed in the primary years.
If you are moving from India and want continuity, this is one of the deepest markets in the Gulf. If you plan a later move to a British or IB system, ask about the transfer point early.
Cultural rules are enforced more visibly than in Dubai
Sharjah applies its own public decency and alcohol rules, and schools reflect the emirate's character in uniform policy, mixed-gender arrangements in the upper years and the school calendar around religious observance.
None of this affects the academic programme, but it does affect daily life, so it is worth asking a school directly rather than assuming Dubai norms.
What families get wrong in Sharjah
The local details that cost families a term, a deposit or a long daily drive.
Assuming the Dubai school run works from Sharjah
Families take a Sharjah home and a Dubai school to save on rent, then discover the morning crossing costs two hours a day. Drive the route on a weekday at 7am before you commit.
Treating a KHDA rating as proof
Sharjah schools are inspected by SPEA. Ask for the SPEA outcome, not a sister campus's Dubai rating.
Leaving attestation until arrival
School records normally need attestation before a Sharjah school can complete enrolment. Starting this after you land routinely adds weeks.
Missing the Arabic and Islamic studies requirement
These subjects are compulsory in the UAE curriculum framework and are taken seriously in Sharjah. Ask how a non-Arabic-speaking child arriving mid-school is supported.
Booking housing before the school answers
Sharjah tenancy contracts are usually annual and hard to exit. Confirm places for every child first.
