Most Panama City schools follow the same stages, whatever the curriculum.

Confirm the year group each child would enter in Panama City. Age cut-offs differ between systems, so the same child can be placed a year apart in two schools.

Most schools assess before offering a place. This can be a short online task, a classroom visit or a subject test, depending on age.

Places and waiting lists
Which Panama City schools have places for your children?
A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.
School websites cannot tell you this. Availability changes when a family leaves, when a contract ends, or when a new year group opens. That is why relevant schools answer directly instead of publishing a number that would be out of date by the time you read it.

Checking each child separately, school by school, is where the search becomes slow. A school that has room in Year 1 may be full in Year 4, and you only learn that after two emails and a wait.

How schooling works in Panama City
MEDUCA authorises private schools, including those teaching foreign curricula, which normally include Spanish, Panamanian history and civics for pupils in the national track. Most international schools follow the American academic year and offer Advanced Placement or the IB Diploma in the senior years.
Two calendars, one city
International schools run August to June; the Panamanian national system runs March to December. Which one a school follows decides when your children can start.
Check the calendar before anything else, particularly for a mid-year arrival — it is the difference between starting next month and waiting a term.
Spanish and the national requirements
Even in English-medium schools, Spanish, Panamanian history and civics appear on the timetable for pupils in the national track.
Ask what happens for a child arriving with no Spanish: streamed classes, exemptions in the first year, or full inclusion from day one all exist here.
Fees, capital fees and enrolment costs
Panama uses the US dollar, so fees are published in dollars, usually as an annual tuition billed monthly or per term.
Several schools charge a one-off capital or entrance fee, sometimes substantial and sometimes reduced for corporate contracts. Ask about it, and about sibling discounts, at the first conversation.
Bus, meals, uniform, devices, trips and examination entries are billed separately.
Admissions and documents
Applications for the August start commonly run from January onwards, with assessment in English and mathematics and a parent interview.
Enrolment requires passports and residence or work-permit documents, apostilled previous school reports with official Spanish translation, birth certificate and vaccination records.
Climate, traffic and daily life
The rainy season, roughly May to November, brings heavy afternoon downpours that lengthen the school run considerably.
Corredor Sur and the coastal roads carry most school traffic. Ask for the bus route and journey time from your building before you sign.
