Which Munich schools have places for your children?
A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.
School websites cannot tell you this. Availability changes when a family leaves, when a contract ends, or when a new year group opens. That is why relevant schools answer directly instead of publishing a number that would be out of date by the time you read it.

Choosing where to live in Munich
We do not rank areas. These are the questions that decide whether a school works day to day.
Starnberg, Gauting and the lake corridor
South-west of the city, where much of the international schooling sits. Houses, gardens, S-Bahn access, and the highest housing costs in Germany.
Bogenhausen and the east
Established, well connected, close to corporate campuses to the north-east, with bilingual and international provision nearby.
Schwabing and central Munich
Apartment living, excellent state schools, easy public transport. Fewer English-language places.
The northern corridor towards Garching and the airport
Practical for families working in the research and automotive clusters. Check the S-Bahn line matches both the office and the school.

How schooling works in Munich
Bavaria sets its own school law, and it is one of the more traditional German systems. State primary runs four years, after which children are recommended to a Gymnasium, Realschule or Mittelschule largely on the basis of year-4 grades. International schools operate outside that structure and offer the IB Diploma or other international qualifications; several bilingual schools attempt to bridge both.
The year-4 transfer decides a great deal
The Übertritt at the end of year 4 sets the secondary track, and the grade thresholds are specific and published. Routes between tracks exist later, but the first decision carries weight.
For a family arriving with a nine or ten year old and no German, this is a genuine argument for an international school rather than a short, high-stakes immersion.
Capacity is the constraint, not choice
Munich's international schools are few and well known, and corporate relocations arrive on the same summer cycle. Waiting lists in primary and lower secondary are normal.
Register as soon as your move is confirmed rather than when you arrive. Ask each school directly about the specific year group; capacity varies sharply between them.
Housing costs and the school run interact
Munich is Germany's most expensive housing market, and the lake corridor near the main international campuses is the most expensive part of it.
School buses run defined routes; living on one is often cheaper overall than living nearer the school. Get the route map before you sign a lease.
Fees and the extras
Munich tuition sits at the higher end for Germany, below Zurich and Geneva. Registration and one-off enrolment or capital contributions are common.
Bus, lunch, trips, laptop programmes and examination entries are billed separately. Some employers cover part of tuition — check what the package includes before budgeting.
Paperwork and vaccination
Address registration (Anmeldung) precedes state school registration. Schools ask for records, birth certificate and proof of measles vaccination, which is a legal condition of attendance.
Records from outside the EU may need certified translation. Start before departure.
