How admissions work in Mumbai
Most Mumbai schools follow the same stages, whatever the curriculum.

Enquire and check the year group
Confirm the year group each child would enter in Mumbai. Age cut-offs differ between systems, so the same child can be placed a year apart in two schools.

Assessment
Most schools assess before offering a place. This can be a short online task, a classroom visit or a subject test, depending on age.

Offer, deposit and registration
An offer is usually held only after a registration fee or deposit is paid. Check whether either is refundable before you accept.

Which Mumbai schools have places for your children?
A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.
School websites cannot tell you this. Availability changes when a family leaves, when a contract ends, or when a new year group opens. That is why we ask schools directly instead of publishing a number that would be out of date by the time you read it.

Choosing where to live in Mumbai
We do not rank areas. These are the questions that decide whether a school works day to day.
Bandra, Khar and Santacruz (western suburbs)
The most common choice for international families: restaurants, walkable pockets, and several IB and IGCSE schools within reach.
Bandra Kurla Complex and Powai
Planned districts with newer campuses and offices in the same area, which is the single best way to shorten a Mumbai commute.
South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Malabar Hill
Established schools and heritage housing, at the highest rents in the city and a hard commute if the office is north.
Navi Mumbai and Thane
Space, newer housing and lower rent, with a growing set of schools and a long trip into the island city.
Moving to Mumbai with children: a checklist
The school-related steps that decide how smooth the first term is.
- Confirm each child's year group under the curriculum you are moving to in Mumbai.
- Collect and, where required, attest school reports and certificates before you leave.
- Ask schools about places for every child in the same request, not one at a time.
- Check whether registration fees and deposits are refundable if your move date changes.
- Check the visa or residency steps that enrolment can depend on.
- Ask about learning support early, since capacity is decided case by case.
- Line up housing only after you know which school can take all of your children.

Moving with more than one child
One school that works for every child, not one child
Most families moving to Mumbai are moving with more than one child, and the hardest part is rarely finding a good school. It is finding one school that can take all of your children in the same year.
Checking each child separately, school by school, is where the search becomes slow. A school that has room in Year 1 may be full in Year 4, and you only learn that after two emails and a wait.

How schooling works in Mumbai
Indian schools are affiliated to a board rather than run by a central authority: CBSE and CISCE are national, the state board is Maharashtra's, and Cambridge and IB are international programmes offered by individual schools. Fees at private unaided schools are subject to state fee-regulation legislation, and admissions timelines are set by each school within state rules.
Choose the board with the exit in mind
If you may leave India within a few years, IB or Cambridge transfers most cleanly. If your children will finish school here and apply to Indian universities, CBSE or ICSE are well understood by admissions offices.
Switching boards after Grade 9 is disruptive; the syllabus and assessment styles diverge sharply in the final years.
Applications open early and close fast
Many schools open applications between October and December for the June intake, with assessments and parent interviews in the weeks after.
For a mid-year arrival, contact schools directly and ask about the current position by grade. Places do exist outside the main cycle, but they are not advertised.
Fees, deposits and what the invoice includes
Tuition is published in rupees per grade and typically billed per term. Admission fees, a refundable deposit and in some cases a development fee are separate.
Transport is billed by route, and in Mumbai it is a significant line: ask for the fee and the door-to-door time from your address, not just the distance.
Commuting is the decision most families revisit
Monsoon flooding, road works and rail crossings all lengthen journeys between June and September. Two hours a day in a car is common and hard on young children.
Pick the school and the office first, then find housing between them. Families who reverse that order tend to move within a year.
Documents and admission paperwork
Expect to provide passports and visas, previous school reports, a transfer certificate from the last school, birth certificate and address proof.
A transfer certificate from an overseas school may need attestation. Request it before you leave the previous country; obtaining it afterwards is slow.
What families get wrong in Mumbai
The local details that cost families a term, a deposit or a long daily drive.
Underestimating the commute
Distance is a poor guide in Mumbai. Ask for the door-to-door bus time from your exact address, in monsoon conditions.
Missing the October–December application window
Most schools recruit for the June intake months in advance. Late arrivals should ask about grade-by-grade availability directly.
Changing board late
Moving between IB, Cambridge and Indian boards after Grade 9 is difficult. Decide before the senior years.
Forgetting the transfer certificate
Indian schools normally require one from the previous school, sometimes attested. Get it before you move.
Reading tuition as the total
Admission fee, deposit, transport, meals and activities are billed separately and add up.
