What shapes the choice in Hong Kong
Places, debentures and capital notes
Some schools use debentures, capital certificates or nomination rights that affect access and cost. Understand the mechanism before applying.
Understanding school feesCurriculum and later moves
The IB is strongly represented in Hong Kong, alongside British and American routes. Choose the system your children can continue.
Compare the main curriculaWaiting lists are normal
Popular year groups run waiting lists, and offers can move late as families relocate in and out.
Waiting lists and availabilityWhich side of the harbour
Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories are practically different school markets once commute time is included.
Questions to ask a schoolHow schooling works in Hong Kong
International schools in Hong Kong are registered with the Education Bureau, which publishes school information and oversees the sector alongside local schools.
How the sector is organised
The Education Bureau registers schools and publishes school profiles, including international schools operating outside the local curriculum.
Several school groups operate multiple campuses, each with its own year groups, curriculum and admissions position.
The school year and applications
Most international schools run from August to June, with the main intake in August.
Application windows for the main intake often open in the preceding autumn, with assessments held during the winter and spring.
Fees and capital structures
Beyond tuition, families may encounter application fees, annual capital levies, refundable debentures or nomination rights linked to priority in admissions.
Ask what is refundable, what is transferable and what happens if you leave before the end of a school year.
Assessment and language
Schools generally assess English language ability and prior attainment, and many teach Mandarin alongside the main curriculum.
Ask how children with no prior Chinese are grouped and supported.

How matching works for Hong Kong families
Results are based on fit, not on payment. Schools cannot buy a position in your shortlist, and nothing you write reaches a school until you choose to contact it.
Ages and entry year
Where each child would be placed in the systems available locally, including age cut-off differences.
Curriculum
The systems you are open to, and how easily a later move would carry across.
Budget
Tuition alongside the fees that are commonly billed separately in this market.
Location and commute
Where you will live or work, and what the daily journey realistically looks like.
There is no single best school in Hong Kong
Demand in Hong Kong makes the best-known schools hard to enter, which is a statement about supply rather than suitability.
The useful filters are available places in the exact year group, the curriculum route to 18, the true annual cost including any capital structure, and the commute from where you will live.
Work from those, then contact the admissions teams you choose.
