A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.

Choosing where to live in Ho Chi Minh City

Thao Dien and An Phu, Thu Duc City
The traditional expatriate area east of the river, with several established campuses and the shortest school runs for families working in the centre.
Phu My Hung, District 7
A planned district south of the centre with wide roads, parks and large purpose-built campuses. Popular with families who want space and predictable journeys.
District 1 and Binh Thanh
Central and convenient for work, but fewer large campuses. Most families here rely on school transport across the bridges.
Bridges are the bottleneck
Crossing the Saigon River at 7:30am is the constraint that decides most school runs. Test it before you sign a lease.

Most families moving to Ho Chi Minh City are moving with more than one child, and the hardest part is rarely finding a good school. It is finding one school that can take all of your children in the same year.
Checking each child separately, school by school, is where the search becomes slow. A school that has room in Year 1 may be full in Year 4, and you only learn that after two emails and a wait.

How schooling works in Ho Chi Minh City
Foreign-invested international schools operate under Vietnamese decree, which sets out licensing, teacher qualifications and the proportion of Vietnamese students a school may admit. Curriculum recognition comes from awarding bodies such as Cambridge, the IB and US regional accreditors, so a Vietnamese licence and an international accreditation are two separate things worth checking.
Two categories of school, with different rules
There are foreign-invested international schools, which teach a full international curriculum in English, and bilingual Vietnamese schools, which teach the national curriculum alongside an international programme.
The distinction matters for admission: quotas on Vietnamese nationals apply to the first category, and the national curriculum requirement applies to the second.
The Tet calendar
The lunar new year holiday moves each year and can close schools for a week or two in late January or February. It sits in the middle of the academic year and affects assessment and travel planning.
If you are moving mid-year, ask how the school handles arrivals immediately before or after Tet.
Fees are quoted in dollars or dong
Some schools publish in US dollars and bill in Vietnamese dong at a stated rate; others publish in dong. Over a three-year posting the difference is real.
Ask which currency the contract is in, what rate applies, and whether tuition is billed annually, by semester or by term.
Growth means new campuses and new capacity
New buildings and new year groups open regularly here, so a school that was full last year may have space this year.
It also means asking about the maturity of the senior school: a campus with a new sixth form has fewer past Diploma or A Level cohorts to point to.
What families get wrong in Ho Chi Minh City
The local details that cost families a term, a deposit or a long daily drive.
Assuming any child can enrol anywhere
Enrolment limits on Vietnamese nationals at foreign-invested schools are set by law. If your children hold Vietnamese nationality, raise it in the first conversation.
Ignoring the river crossing
Thao Dien to District 7 looks close and is not, at 7:30am. Choose the school, then live on the right side of the bridge.
Not confirming the billing currency
A dollar-denominated fee billed in dong can move with the exchange rate. Get the mechanism in writing.
Overlooking the work permit and visa chain
Dependent visas usually follow the parent's work permit, and schools ask for documentation at enrolment. Start both together.
Judging a school on its building
Facilities here are new and impressive. Ask instead about teacher retention, class sizes and results history in the year group your child enters.
