Which side you live on effectively decides your school list, because crossing the city daily is not realistic. Schools run British, American, IB and German programmes alongside compulsory Egyptian subjects. How admissions work in Cairo
Most Cairo schools follow the same stages, whatever the curriculum.

Enquire and check the year group
Confirm the year group each child would enter in Cairo. Age cut-offs differ between systems, so the same child can be placed a year apart in two schools.

Assessment
Most schools assess before offering a place. This can be a short online task, a classroom visit or a subject test, depending on age.

Offer, deposit and registration
An offer is usually held only after a registration fee or deposit is paid. Check whether either is refundable before you accept.
Documents to prepare
Some documents can take time to arrange from abroad. Start collecting them before you have chosen a school.

Places and waiting lists
Which Cairo schools have places for your children?
A place is not something a school has in general. It exists for one year group, at one campus, for one intake. Two children in the same family can get two different answers from the same school on the same day.
School websites cannot tell you this. Availability changes when a family leaves, when a contract ends, or when a new year group opens. That is why we ask schools directly instead of publishing a number that would be out of date by the time you read it.
For each child, a Cairo school can answer that a place is available, that there is a waiting list, that the intake is full, or that it cannot confirm yet. You see the answer, the fees and the next step, and you decide where to focus.

Choosing where to live in Cairo
We do not rank areas. These are the questions that decide whether a school works day to day.
New Cairo and Fifth Settlement
The largest concentration of international campuses, compound housing and newer infrastructure, east of the centre.
Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October
The western equivalent, with its own set of established schools, gated compounds and access to the Alexandria road.
Maadi
Leafy, walkable and long favoured by diplomatic and NGO families, with several schools nearby and a Nile-side feel.
Zamalek and Garden City
Central island and riverside living, close to embassies, with fewer campuses and a longer school run.
Moving to Cairo with children: a checklist
The school-related steps that decide how smooth the first term is.
- Confirm each child's year group under the curriculum you are moving to in Cairo.
- Collect and, where required, attest school reports and certificates before you leave.
- Ask schools about places for every child in the same request, not one at a time.
- Check whether registration fees and deposits are refundable if your move date changes.
- Check the visa or residency steps that enrolment can depend on.
- Ask about learning support early, since capacity is decided case by case.
- Line up housing only after you know which school can take all of your children.

Moving with more than one child
One school that works for every child, not one child
Most families moving to Cairo are moving with more than one child, and the hardest part is rarely finding a good school. It is finding one school that can take all of your children in the same year.
Checking each child separately, school by school, is where the search becomes slow. A school that has room in Year 1 may be full in Year 4, and you only learn that after two emails and a wait.
One request covers every child. Each school answers for each child, so you can see immediately where all of your children could start together, and where you would be splitting the family across two schools.

How schooling works in Cairo
The Ministry of Education licenses international schools, which teach a foreign curriculum alongside compulsory Egyptian subjects — Arabic, religion and social studies — for pupils in the relevant tracks. Schools describe themselves as British, American or IB, and the qualifications they offer in the senior years vary, so confirm what is actually examined.
East or west decides everything
New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed sit on opposite sides of Greater Cairo, roughly an hour and a half apart at peak. Families choose a side and stay on it.
Anchor on the workplace, then the school, then the compound. Reversing that order is the most common and most expensive mistake here.
Arabic and Egyptian subjects are not optional
Arabic, and depending on the track religion and social studies, are required for many pupils, including at international schools. Non-Arabic-speaking foreign pupils may follow a different Arabic stream.
Ask which stream your children would join, how it is assessed, and whether it affects the overall report or graduation.
Fees, currency and payment terms
Tuition is published in Egyptian pounds per year group and usually billed in two or three instalments. Some schools apply a separate fee for foreign-passport holders or quote part of the fee in foreign currency.
Currency movement in recent years has made year-on-year increases large. Ask for the last three years of fees, in writing, before budgeting.
Registration, bus by zone, books, uniform, activities and examination entries are billed separately.
Admissions, assessment and capacity
Applications for September typically open in the preceding winter or spring, with assessments in English and mathematics, and interviews at some schools.
Well-known campuses fill early in the primary years. Apply to several, and for a mid-year move ask each school for the current position by year group.
Documents and the practical setup
Enrolment normally requires passports and residence visas, previous school reports, birth certificates and vaccination records; some documents need attestation for the Egyptian system.
Compound life in the satellite cities is the norm for international families, and schools are usually a short drive within the same development.
What families get wrong in Cairo
The local details that cost families a term, a deposit or a long daily drive.
Living on the opposite side of the city
New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed are far apart. Choose a side and keep home, work and school on it.
Assuming Arabic is optional
Arabic and Egyptian subjects are required for many pupils. Ask which stream applies to your children.
Budgeting from this year's fee alone
Increases have been large. Ask for three years of published fees and how rises are set.
Not checking what is examined in the senior years
School labels vary. Confirm whether IGCSE, A level, the American diploma or the IB Diploma is actually offered.
Leaving attestation late
Some documents need legalisation for enrolment. Prepare them before you arrive.
